About the Worms

A few of my worm bins are a mix of Red Worms (>90%) and European Nightcrawlers.  The two species are very similar and both are useful compost worms.  When ordering Red Worms (Eisenia fetida) you will find some European Nightcrawlers (Eisenia hortensis) - both will happily live with each other!  Please contact me if you only want pure red worms or European!

Red Worms (Eisenia fetida)
These worms are considered the most useful in vermicomposting
systems.  The easiest to grow in high density culture.  They will tolerate
a wide range of environmental conditions and fluctuations.  Extremely
prolific!!!  Red Worms are available in 1 to 3 lb quantities.  For larger
amounts, please call or email: 336-877-7630.

European Nightcrawlers (Eisenia hortensis)
These worms are tough, tolerant worms that are great for fishing bait
or vermicomposting.  As with red worms, they do best when temperatures are between 60-70F (soil temp).  European Nightcrawlers can grow very large; smaller than Canadian Nightcrawlers but much larger than their cousin, the Red Worm. Their reproductive rate is a bit slower than other composting worms but I find these worms easier to handle than either Africans or Red worms.
